On August 28, 2023, a day before the release of Sea of Stars from the creators of the platformer The Messenger, reviews of the role-playing game started to appear online. Its average score on the OpenCritic website reached 94 out of 100 based on 17 reviews. All reviewers recommended the game for playing.

At the time of writing this piece, the average score for Sea of Stars on Metacritic was 91 out of 100, but only based on the first five reviews.

Almost all reviewers agreed that one of the key features of Sea of Stars was its original and interesting combat system. Some journalists noted that the game couldn't be considered difficult, and winning many battles was relatively easy. A writer from GamesRadar mentioned that Sea of Stars was somewhat lacking in depth when it came to combat and puzzles.

The main advantages of Sea of Stars, as pointed out by reviewers, included the magnificent pixel art, stunning soundtrack, various references to classic jRPGs, an excellent storyline, and memorable characters. Windows Central specifically highlighted the game's truly vast world with numerous side quests, secrets, and mini-games. According to the reviewer, exploring the locations is very interesting, although the limited fast travel across the world is somewhat disappointing.

The release of Sea of Stars is scheduled for August 29, 2023, on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The game will feature Russian language subtitles. It will be available on the Game Pass and PS Plus Extra and Premium services from the day of release.
